Buying appliances isn't a sexy or fun topic, but saving a bunch of money is. Mrs. TT and I recently had our washer break down on us and we've had enough of the old unit. We ordered a new washer and dryer on Cyber Monday through AJ Madison online (definitely not Ashley Madison) for around $1,000. I have bought other appliances at Appliances Connection in the past and had a good experience with that company as well. Both companies are based out of New York or New Jersey and ship anywhere in the US in a week or less. Many people don't even consider buying appliances online and they're likely paying too much! You can easily save a couple hundred bucks buying appliances online rather than buying locally at the big box stores. Let me tell you why!
#1 – No Sales Tax
Buying online from another state usually doesn't require you to pay sales tax. This is a simple way to save $100 or more on your appliance purchase.
#2 – Lower Prices
Online stores have lower overhead than massive big box stores but they still have high volume, so they generally can sell for less.
#3 – Instant or Mail-in-Rebates
Many online appliance stores offer instant or mail-in-rebates if you purchase a combination of appliances. Always check multiple stores before purchasing to see which has the best offers.
#4 – Quick FREE Shipping
Ordering from the east coast might seem like it would take awhile to ship, but it is surprisingly quick. I ordered our new washer and dryer on Monday, it was shipped on Wednesday, and delivered on Friday. Shipping was free and the shipping guys removed the appliances from the packaging for no extra charge. Installation costs extra but is pretty easy if you read the manual or watch a couple YouTube clips.
#5 – Points and Miles through Online Shopping Portals
Contributor Nick reminded me that if I would have went through an online shopping portal, to purchase my appliances, I could have earned 1-2x American Airlines or Southwest points at AJ Madison. Check out his article on shopping portals to stack your rewards!
Other Tips:
- If you choose to buy appliances at a local big box store make to utilize discounted gift cards. You can generally save 6-12% on your purchase! This works for purchases from almost any store, and is one of my favorite ways to save money!
- Google the appliance model number and check Google Shopping before your purchase. You may be able to find it cheaper locally or at other stores.
Bottom LineÂ
I know people will be concerned about warranty implications of buying appliances online from a company out of state. The important thing to know is warranty issues with appliances are generally handled with the manufacturer directly. There really is no difference between buying online versus buying at Home Depot or Sears. I've been able to save hundreds of dollars buying appliances online and so can you!
